DOG DROWNED
FATAL CHASE AFTER STONE.
ICE BREAKS ON LAKE. Plucky but unavailing attempts to save the life of an Airedale dog which fell through the ice on a frozen lake were made on the Common, Southampton, by James Summers, aged IQ, an unemployed ship’s steward, of Brunswick Square, Southompton. The dog, which belonged to Mr Geoffrey Howard, a member of Jack Hylton’s band, chased a stone on to the thawing ice of the lake and fell through. Summers, discarding his overcoat and jacket, broke through the ice and waded in and started to swim, breaking the ice with his bare arms. Three times he was forced to leave the water owing to the intense coldness, but after being rubbed to restore the circulation, went in again. At the third attempt he got quite near the dog, but was prevented from reaching it by the thickness of the ice. The dog was exhausted and drowned. Mr Howard also entered , the icy water to help in the rescue of his dog.
