A little sin will shake your trust and disturb your peace more than the greatest sufferings: yea, in those sufferings your assurance and joy in God will grow and abound most if sin be kept out. So much sin as gets in, so much peace will go out. — R. Deighton. Led by the Anglican General Synod, the heads of the various churches in the Dominion have agreed to call upon the citizens everywhere to observe to-morrow, Sunday, as a special day of prayer for the nation. This decision has been reached in view of the fact that Parliament will meet next Wednesday, and that it will then be called upon to face tasks and problems of almost unexampled difficulty and urgency in the history of this young country. The factors which bring about this situation are mainly the world-wide trade depression, with its inevitable consequence of widespread unemployment and distress, while the catastrophic events in Hawkes Bay both magnify and intensify the difficulty of the situation. It does indeed seem a fit “time for the whole nation to lift up its heart to God, beseeching His guidance and wisdom in a time of grave difficulty. The Day of Prayer will be observed in all the churches locally and special attention is called to the United Civic Service which is to be held in the Town Hall at 8.15 p.m. under the presidency of his Worship the Mayor.
