SETTLERS IN VICTORIA

QUESTION OF MAINTENANCE. (United Tress Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) London, December 9. Mr J. H. Thomas, Secretary for the Dominions, was further questioned in the House of Commons regarding Victorian land settlers. Major R. G. C. Glyn asked whether Britain was not going to do something to maintain the starving who went out in connection with a settlement scheme which the British Government had approved. Mr Thomas said that 828 settlers, mostly accompanied by families, went out and 343 took up land, 240 being still on their holdings. Britain had paid £43,510 towards the cost of the scheme, but responsibility for the settlers rested with the Victorian Government, which was holding an inquiry.
