EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL

DISPLAY IN SHOP WINDOW. A striking display showing the very small food value of alcohol and the injurious effects of over-indulgence is to be seen iu the window of the premises formerlyknown as Cookham House in Dee street. Placards and exhibits draw attention to the fact that one pint of milk Is equal in food value to 19 pints of beer and that a teacup full of egg contains as much food as 10 pints of beer. A large barrel of beer is shown and beside it Is a placard showing the results of the analysis of the beer: “Water 90 per cent.; alcohol (poison) 5 per cent.; extractives 5 per cent.” The question is asked: “Why drink poisoned water?” Another exhibit is a bag of barley above which Is printed: “This bag contains good food, all of which is wasted when it Is made into whisky.” Prizes are being offered for the best description of the display, there being classes for different ages.
