VAGRANT VERSE

THE RACE OF LIFE. (Written for the Southland Times.) Run on, run on, For the race of life's begun; The way is long, but the heart is strong At thn rising of the sun, And the feet, are swift, and joy is nigh, For youth can every care defy; With noble aim and courage high Run on. Run on, run on, In the burning noonday heat; Faint not, nor stay in the burning way To rest your weary feet, Still keep your eyes on the distant goal, Fear not the threatening clouds that roll Forever round your deathless soul. Run on. Run on, run on, Run on till the daylight dies; Though with slower tread, and drooping head, And tired, tear-dimmed eyes, For your God awaits His wearied one Till you sink at. His feet at set of sun, And hear His gentle voice, “Well Done,” Run on. —Derek Steel. •Wellington, December, 1930.
