FIRE AT WINTON
TWO-STOREY BUILDING ABLAZE.
STRONG GALE ASSISTS FLAMES
A telephone message was received at the Times Office at 2.30 this morning stating that a fire was then raging in a two-storey building in the main street, Winton, comprising Noble and Stewart’s butcher shop, a barber’s shop" and a billiard saloon on the second floor. A high gale was blowing at the time and the flames had a very strong hold.
The Winton Fire Brigade was soon in attendance and directed its energies towards saving the adjoining premises, the local branch of the Bank of New Zealand on one side and the business premises of Messrs Irwin and Grimwood on the other. The occupants of houses further along the street were also aroused as a precautionary measure, but as brick partitions separated the other buildings from the scene of the outbreak it was believed that there was little possibility of the fire spreading further?
