GORE BOROUGH
MEETING OF COUNCIL. Last night’s meeting of the Gore Borough Council was attended by the Mayor, Mr D. L. Poppelwell and Councillors 1. Sim, W. Gee, M. Hay, J. A. Wright, A. Davidson, T. A. C. Pearce, A. McLachlan,. J. A. Baldey, F. Young and W. K. Hamilton. An application was received from Mrs Sharp, Robertson street, West Gore, for her residence to be connected with the town water supply. —Referred to the Water Committee. Messrs Smith and Dolamore advised that the Vacuum Oil Co., Ltd., had decided to secure a fresh license upon terms suggested by the council, but asked that notice of cancellation be extended to at least six months.—Six months’ notice of cancelia j tion granted. ' The Borough engineer advised that a motor garage was being erected on a property at East Gore without a permit having been obtained. —The Town Clerk reported that the plans had since come to hand. The Works Committee made the following recommendations: — That the council contribute £2O towards the cost of a 4-inch sewer to Mr E. C. Smith’s residence provided that Mr Smith pays the difference. That the macrocarpa hedge from the entrance to the memorial on the north side in Fairfield street, and in Irk street be taken ■ out.
That the lease to the domain having expired, the engineer be. asked to supply levels for grading and levelling the domain; also that the gorse be rooted out. That the South Ward committee take into consideration the kerbing and channelling of Crombie street as far as Elsie street. That the East Ward committee take into consideration the kerbing and channelling of Huron street from Halton to Church streets.
The committee recommends that , when the by-laws are passed consideration be given to the appointment for a period of an inspector to carry out the duties of traffic inspector, water inspector and inspector of nuisances, so that more attention can be given by the ranger to his other work. The committee’s recommendations were adopted. Councillor M. Hay reported that the river in the vicinity of Oxford street, East Gore, was encroaching upon the bank to such an extent that only a few yards separated the edge of the river from the gravelled portion of the road. It was decided to refer the matter to the Works Committee for investigation and report.
