TENNIS

CLUB MATCHES COMMENCE.

* WEATHER. UNSATISFACTORY. SEVERAL GAMES NOT PLAYED.

The weather on Saturday proved most unsatisfactory for the commencement of A and B grade inter-club tennis matches. When the Postponement Committee of the Association met at 11 a.m., the sun was shinning and it was therefore decided that matches should be played. Before 2 p.m., however, there were further heavy showers and the courts were thoroughly soaked. In some parts of the town the rain was heavier than in others. Moreover some courts dried more quickly than others. The consequence was that while some matches were completed others were not begun. Conditions at Winton were so doubtful that the Gladstone team did not risk a journey for nothing. The Southend senior team travelled to Bluff but so wet were the courts that no matches could be, played." The only senior match completed was that between Invercargill and St. Mary’s, the former securing sufficient sets for a decision. Two B grade matches were finished, Waihopai No. 2 defeating Georgetown No. 2 and Kennington defeating St. Mary’s. Georgetown No. 1 and Waihopai No. 1 teams began their match but had to abandon it.
