BLUFF NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.) For evensong on Sunday evening an exchange of pulpits was made between the Rev. W. W. Ewart and the Rev. Mr And-rews-Baxter, the latter taking the service at St. Matthew’s Church of England, Bluff, while Mr Ewart preached at Gladstone. The week end weather was not of the best, some sharp . showers making things unpleasant for a while on Sunday afternoon. Monday was line, however, though a little more strength in the sunshine would be appreciated by all. Mrs D. Fraser and family, of Waimtu. haka, spent the week-end with Mrs Fraser’s sister, Mrs D. Mitchell, “Auahi,” Greenhills.

Mr A. Allen, of the Wellington Post Office staff has been spending a week with his brother-in-law, Mr R. Kirkwood; Bay View Hotel. He returned yesterday. Recent guests at the Club Hotel included Mr and Mrs D. L. Poppelwell (Gore), the Misses Long and McKenzie (Invercargill), Messrs J. Strong (Dunedin), Broughton (Christchurch), J. Smith (Invercargill), H. Manlin, G. Olsen, A. Pedersen (Stewart Island), and Captain Hollis (s.s. Port Caroline). A large audience greeted the Bluff Marine Band for its sacred concert in the Town Hall on Sunday night. Composed mainly of young players, with a sprinkling of experienced veterans, the brand is making rapid progress under its capable and painstaking conductor, Mr M. Gillooly, and a corresponding growth of local interest in its welfare is apparent. On Sunday night assistance was given by the following talented local artists: The Misses L. Hunter (violin solos), E. Metzger, (song), and Master W. Cunliffe (recitations). Miss M. McKenzie acted as accompaniste. Each item elicited sustained applause. The band, which was in fine form, gave an excellent account of itself in its programme, which included the hymn “Eternal Father”; sacred selection, "Ora Pro Nobis”; selection, “Members of the Opera”;-a waltz melody; and marches "Black Dwarf,” "Colonel Bogey” and “For Freedom and Honour.” At the conclusion of the Programme Mr R. Preston thanked the audience on behalf of'the band, and prophesied that wjith the talent available Bluff would soon have a combination of vyhich the citizens could be justifiably proud.
