TAPANUI NOTES

(From Our Correspondent). The annual meeting of Iho Tapanui P.W.M.U. was held last Thursday evening. There was a good attendance, and the Rev. W. Norton presided. After the report and balance sheet had been read, Mrs J. S. Bickerstaff, Dunrobin, gave an address on prayer. The election of officers resulted as follows: president, Mrs Norton; vice-presi-dents, Mrs J. Smith, Mrs Graham; secretary, Miss McKenzie; treasurer, Mrs Edgar; The first round of the competition for ll.'and J. Smith’s trophies was’played on the golf links at Dunrobin on September 13. Mrs Macdonald, Mrs Lou and Miss Yardley, handed in the best ladies’ cards, and the best men’s cards were by D. Macdonald, J. McLennan, and R. G. Foster. On Wednesday afternoon the Tapanui Ladies’ Golf Club held a competition for a trophy presented by Mr T. L. Floyd. Miss R. Robertson was tho winner. At the meeting of the„Land Board this month, the application to substitute the name of Alan Rodger for that of Keith Rodger, in connection with Ihe settlement of sections Is and 2s, Tapanui Settlement, 556 acres was granted. ■ Dr Stcnhouse, of Owaka, has, on account of ill-health disposed of his practice to Dr Johnson, Heriot. Dr Stcnhouse intends to spend sonic time in the North Auckland district. The bachelors of Merino Downs and Wair kaka Valley held a very successful ball in Mr W. Lcitzc’s barn. Visitors were present from Gore, Waikdikoi, and neighbouring districts. Mr J. Wyncs was M.C. On Friday evening, the ’Koi Football Club held its annual dance in the hall. Excellent music by Stewart’s orchestra and a good floor, made the evening’s dancing pleasant. Miss Dacker kindly gave an extra. Messrs W. and J. Spittle were M.C.’s. Mr P. Boylen of the West Otago sub-union presented the silver cup for the second grade competition, won b ythe ’Koi football team. Mr Boylen congratulated the team on their win and also on the win at Balclutha of the schoolboys and juniors in the seven-a-sido competition. Mr W. L. McKenzie replied for the ’Koi. The death of Mrs McPherson at her residence, Waikoikoi, removes another old settler from the district, as it is about 30 years since the McPhersons settled here.
