OBSTETRICAL SOCIETY

TOTAL OF £31,741. MEETING OF SOCIETY. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, May 21. At a public function this afternoon held under the auspices of the Nev/ Zealand Obstetrical Society, the amounts collected throughout the Dominion for the Obstetric Fund were announced as follows: Auckland . . . . £11,060 Wellington . . . . 9,101 Canterbury .... 5,150 Otago and Southland . . 6,430 Total .... £31,741 It was also announced that headquarters organizing expenses for the nine months of the campaign were £370, or less than per cent, of the total. Twenty-five thousand pounds w’as Landed to the University authorities to-day by representatives of the fund. The suTplus will be retained for a week or two, then be handed over for an endowment for scholarship and research purposes in the Obstetric Department. At this afternocci’s meeting, Dr W. Irving, president of the society, thanked all who had given assistance. During the day, the executive of the Obstetrical Society met in conference with Sir Lindo Ferguson and Sir T. K. Sidey, Chancellor of Otago University, and decided that two scholarships be awarded in obstetrics in future, one to be known as the Obstetrical Society’s Scholarship and the other as the Auckland Scholarship. Mr Sidey said he hoped it would be possible to subsidize these valuable scholarships which would then make it possible for each scholarship to be of sufficient value to give a young New Zealand doctor two years post graduate experience in obstetrics in tho large centres abroad. He said the Obstetric Society would be asked to nominate two or three specialist representatives in England to act as a recommendation committee to interview respective applicants for the post and he was sure the University Council would be pleased to confer with the society before it made any final decision. Appreciation was expressed, both at the executive and public meeting, of the services of Professor Riley and Dr Russell Ritchie, who have for so many years rendered splendid service in teaching obstetrics, despite the fact that they were hampered by lack of finance amd facilities for practical work. Congratulations were received from Lady Bledisloe on behalf of Lord Bledisloe and herself on the success of the appeal and (he indefatigable efforts of the workers.
