SHEEP DOG TRIALS

SECOND DAY AT GORE. ADVERSE WEATHER CONDITIONS. The 25th annual trials of the Gore Sheep Dog Trials Club were continued at the Gore racecourse yesterday. The weather was very boisterous throughout the day and conditions were just as unpleasant as they were pleasant on the opening day. Excellent entries were received and in the Long Pull event 23 competed as compared with 15 last year. Throughout the competition some very fine work was witnessed and the performances of the placed dogs were all very creditable. The winner was found in Mr R. Anderson’s (Kauana) Scot, who put up a good run and gained 31pts. He was closely followed by Mr C. R. McKay’s (Waikaia) Maud, who also put up a good run. The veteran enthusiast. Mr J. B. Purdue (Nightcaps) got third and fifth money respectively with Sweep (31pts) and Spot (29pts), and the fourth position was filled by Mr E. McLeod’s (Mataura) Nellie with 291pts. In the event for dogs that have never won in open company there was an entry of 16 as against 18 last year. The work in this class was fair and Mr L. A. Charleson’s Skip perfomed well and gained first over Mr E. McLeod’s Tibby by half a point. The third and fourth placed dogs put up fair performances. In the Huntaway 12 competed as against 9 last year and the work throughout was of a very fair order, the winner, Mr E. McLeod’s Barney, being outstanding. Mr J. J. McNoe’s wethers again ran strongly and the club is very much indebted to him for the use of his sheep. The work of the judge, Mr David Morgan, Te Houka, was again very satisfactory and his decisions rfiet with universal approval. The assistant judge, Mr John S. Smith, also carried out his duties in a very efficient manner. The officials of the club are to be complimented on the manner in which they carried out their duties under unpleasant conditions, and with Mr J. S. Waddell as president everything passed off very pleasantly. The 1930 trials can be written down as one of the most successful fixtures held in the history of the club. The secretary, Mr J. L. Matheson, carried through his duties in a most obliging and efficient manner and patrons were well catered for. The result of the guessing competition for the cake donated by Messrs Matheson and Meldrum was announced during the afternoon, Messrs A. P. McKenzie (Heriot) and A. G. Copland (Gore) tying for the prize. A guessing competition was also held for the live weight of a wether, and the winner turned up in Mr Duncan Kerr, Gore, who assessed the exact weight, 1111 b.
