HIGHLAND SOCIETY. (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Mataura Highland Society was held on Friday, Chieftain W. Buchanan presiding in the absence of Chief A. N. Mac Gibbon. Notwithstanding counter attractions there was a very satisfactory attendance of members. The main item of the evening was a lecture by the Rev. George Renwick, of Lumsden, whose subject was on “Some Characteristics of a Scotsman.” In a very excellent address Mr Renwick dealt with the marshal abilities of the Scotsman his fighting, as demonstrated by the actions of the Light Brigade which withheld the onslaught of the enemy, the fight at Bannockburn, his intense religious ferver and his thrift and fugality. He was known for his liberality in necessitious cases as well as for his hospitality. The speaker told a large number of very humorous stories illustrating his several pointe, whieh delighted the audience. A hearty vote of thanks moved by Chieftain J. Sutherland was accorded Mr Renwick for his interesting address. Mataura R.S.A. A committee meeting of the Mataura Returned Soldiers’ Association was held on Friday and attended by Mr R. Sutton (president) and Messrs C. D. Smith, T. Clearwater, A. Richmond, A. Cockburn, A. A. Wright and L. McKelvie (secretary). A statement of accounts in connection with the Anzac Day service showed a surplus, and it was resolved that the amount be forwarded to the Gore R.S.A. for comforts for returned soldiers in the Gore Hospital. It was decided that a letter be sent to the Girl Guides' Association expressing appreciation in connection with the sale of poppies, and also to Miss Sleeman for her work respecting the making of wreaths. The following were appointed an unemployment committee: —The president and Messrs C. D. Smith, A. Cockburn and T. Clearwater. Mr Cockburn was appointed to interview the local retailers in regard to the cash purchase scheme.
