BULLET IN JAW

MEXICAN PRESIDENT ATTEMPTED ASSASSINATION SIX SHOTS FIRED (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph-Copyright.) New York, February 5. A message from Mexico City states that' Pascual Ortiz Rubio was wounded in the jaw by a would-be assassin who fired on him a few hours after being sworn in today as President. The bullet was extricated. His condition is not serious. A further message from Mexico City states that six shots were fired. The President's wife was grazed and their little niece, Opelia Ortega, was slightly wounded. A by-stander was also hit. The assailant was arrested. Later advice from Mexico City states that the attempt was made as the President was leaving the National Palace after the inauguration address. The President pledged the Government to five years hard work for the common people, terming the workers and peasants the hope of Mexico. The restoration of conservative, or even moderate men and systems was impossible because the country heart and soul was intent on the radical work of restoring to the race its heritage. The Government would be “entirely revolutionary.” A close censorship was immediately established. PART OF WIDESPREAD PLOT SEVEN ADDITIONAL ARRESTS. (Rec. 6.55 p.m.) Mexico City, February 5. Mexican authorities believe that the attempt on the life of Rubio is part of a widespread plot on orders from the Department of the Interior. Seven additional persons have been arrested, but their identity is not revealed. Rubio was not seriously injured, and the slug has been removed from his left jaw. The President’s wife, niece, military aide-de-camp and a bystander were gra.ed by other bullets when a youth, presumably a partisan of Vasconcellos, clothed in black, fired six shots into Rubio’s automobile before the' National Palace. The assassin stubbornly refused to talk, and was placed under a heavy guard. Accomplices of the assassin, one of whom -was a woman, attempted to escape on cycles from the policemen who caught them. The youth, who was caught, wore the Catholic insignia to escape detection. An indescribable impression of regret is visible everywhere among the citizens who, earlier in the day, were in the best of humour at the peaceful and orderly manner in which Rubio had assumed office. Representatives of all political factions expressed disgust at the cold-blooded attempts at murder. Seven persons were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to assassinate. It is authoritatively reported that the assassin admitted to the War Secretary, Senor Am are, that he, Miguel Flores, aged 22, is a student and follower of Vasconcellos, the defeated anti-re-electionist presidential candidate. He states that Vasconcellists hatched the plot to kill Rubio and his entire Cabinet, and ex-president Portes Gil, produce Governmental chaos and seize control. The police are watching closely for further trouble, the exact seriousness of which they are unable to ascertain as yet.
