THE PRESBYTERY

MONTHLY MEETING. UNION OF NIGHTCAPS AND OHAI. The monthly meeting of the Presbytery of Southland was held yesterday, the Rev. C. J. Tocker presiding in the absence of the Moderator (the Rev. J. S. Pate). The resignation, owing to ill-health, of the Rev. J. H. Robertson, of Woodlands, was accepted with regret, as from March .31. The Rev. W. J. Robertson, Waikiwi, was appointed Moderator in his brother’s place. The Rev. J. Collie was nominated by the Presbytery- as Moderator of the General Assembly, 1931. It was decided to grant a Presbyterial certificate to Mr George Calder, of Isla Bank, who intends studying for the ministry. An invitation from the Kirk session of First Church to a farewell social to the Rev. J. L. Robinson and Mrs Robinson on Tuesday evening next was accepted by the Presbytery. The Rev. W. J. Robertson reported on the sale of sections at Stewart Island. The proceeds of the sale will, after the defrayment of expenses of subdivision, go to a fund for a new manse. The Presbytery approved of the plans submitted for the subdivision and recommended the Church Board of Property to add its approval. Nightcaps and Ohai. The Rev. J. Fordyce reported on the visit of a commission to Ohai and Nightcaps. Hitherto these parishes had been separate home mission charges, but circumstances had arisen which, made the congregations come to the conclusion that it would be better if they became united again and a minister placed in charge at a salary of £3OO, with £5O car allowance. Mr W. J. McGregor, of Mount Linton, also explained the position regarding the charges and the desire of the congregations to have one sanctioned charge. After hearing the reports the Presbytery agreed to the union and carried the following resolution:—“That the Presbytery give effect to the wishes of the Nightcaps-Ohai people to call a minister and that the Home Mission Committee be informed of the change, the declaration to take effect on March 31.”
