WARM TRIBUTES

THE LATE SIR JOHN FINDLAY. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, December 11. Warm tributes to the late Sir John Findlay were paid on behalf of the Supreme Court "bench to-day. On the bench were the Chief Justice, Mr Myers, and Mr Justice Blair, and those present included Sir Francis Bell and Messrs A. Fair, Solicitor-Gener-al, A. Gray, K.C., and E. Page, S.M. Sir Francis Bell referred to Sir John Findlay’s appointment as Attorney-General and Leader of the Legislative Council when Sir Joseph Ward first became Prime Minister, and eulogized his work in that direction as showing the courage of departure from the past, and wisdom for the future. He created the office of King’s Counsel in New Zealand and was himself one of the first appointed to that position by Order-in-Council. His part in the administration of the law was marked by real distinction and his political career, brief as it was, was a brilliant one. Sir Francis Bell also bore tribute to Sir John Findlay’s attributes as a private citizen with an attractive personality. The Chief Justice dwelt on Sir John Findlay’s eminence in the legal profession, his scholarship and culture.
