GORE SHOW

PEOPLE’S DAY A GREAT SUCCESS LARGE CROWD PRESENT i WEATHER REMAINS FINE Again favoured with fine weather, the second day of the Gore Agricultural and' Pastoral Association’s forty-eighth annual show attracted a very large attendance of the public, all of whom spent a very enjoyable and interesting day viewing the remarkably high quality stock exhibited in each section and the sideshow attractions, of which there was a very large number on the ground. The feature of the morning was the judging of the horse sections in which there were very large entries. This work was protracted until the afternoon on account of close competition and large classes. Then followed the parade with an interesting programme of competitions. Weather conditions were ideal throughout the day and the gathering was one of the largest ever seen on the grounds. The gate receipts were slightly below those of the previous year, amounting to £252 6/as against £254 7/6, but in view of the increased membership of the association it is considered that the reduction in admission receipts does not necessarily indicate a smaller attendance. , The grounds were in excellent order and indicated much attention on the part of the ground committee, of which Mr P. Keir is the energetic chairman. It was noticeable that certain improvements had been effected since the previous fixture, notably in the accommodation for stock. It is probable that no grand parade of stock at previous Gore shows has been as impressive as that witnessed yesterday afternoon when the prize-winning horses and cattle were led around the ring headed by the Gore Pipe Band. The familiar Clydesdale entire Archaic ■ was again given the honour of leading the parade, and the prizewinning representatives of this breed presented a fine scene. The light, horses all appeared to be splendidly groomed and in excellent show condition with harness and turn-outs all showing to advantage. The parade of dairy cattle was very fine ami gave some indication of the remarkably high quality of the prize-winning exhibits. All the dairy breeds were well represented by unusually fine typical cattle which would have done credit to a metropolitan fixture. HORSES. An increased entry was forward in the horse section, this being particularly noticeable in the ponies, which reached the astonishing total of 94. The quality of the exhibits was outstanding in practically every instance and the display of horse flesh was very impressive. The judging was followed with the keenest interest throughout the morning and early afternoon into which .the judges’ work was extended on account of the large number of entries. Draughts. The entries in the sections for draught horses showed a substantial increase over those received for last year’s fixture and in a number of cases competition was particularly keen. The quality generally was most satisfactory and reflected credit on the breeders, most of whom came from the Eastern District. If anything the horses exhibited in the female sections were superior to those forward in the male sections and compared more than favourably with previous years exhibits. In the class for entire horse, any age, Mr T. Logan’s well-known sire Archaic, which has for a number of years had the honour of wearing the championship ribbon at the Gore Show and elsewhere, secured the award on account of his outstanding qualities and added further to his championship record. Mr J. R. Lockie’s, Sir Leslie, which gained the second award, showed excellent breeding but was slightly lighter in the middle. He should, however, improve with age. The reserve champion was found in the class for the entire colt, two years, in which Mr A. Thomson, Kelso, secured the award with Great Count—a colt by Rosencraig—Camperdown Princess. This colt, which exhibits the good qualities of his sire, has so far been unbeaten in his class and won at the Dunedin and Clutha shows as well as gaining the reserve champion ribbon at the latter. The same exhibitor also scored in the class for entire colt, one year, with Rosendale by Rosencraig—Waterside Ruby. This colt was awarded the championship at the Clutha Show and has size and quality to recommend him. A feature of the draught horse sections was the success achieved by Rosencraig’s progeny. The second award in this class went to Mr T. Logan’s Mossdale Rising Sun, the progeny of Archaic —Mossdale Princess, which was also typical of the breed. The well-known Otama breeder was also successful with Archaic in the class for the best action and fastest walking heavy draught stallion, his excellent action winning him the award. The second placed horse J. and R. Lockie’s Sir Leslie was faster in his movement, but did not quite have the style of the winner. The championship in the classes for geldings was won by Messrs Fleming Bros.’ Jimmy, sire Norton Westward Ho, dam, Flower, by Bancor. This gelding had size and conformation to recommend him and had a pleasing carriage. The reserve championship was secured by Mr A. Thomson’s Prince, sire, Myra Footprint; dam, Baron Bold mare. This gelding was. not quite so heavy as the champion, but was of good type and carried himself well. In the class for gelding two years the award went to Mr G. W. Wayte, Otamita, with a good-looking horse by Myra Footprint. There was only a single entry in the class for gelding one year Mr T. Logan securing the award with a typical sort by Archaic out of Mossdale Pride. Messrs Fleming Bros, scored in the class for pair of geldings and also secured the first and second awards in the class for spring dray horse, mare or gelding up to 30 cwt. The Clydesdale Society’s silver medal for the best yearling or two-year colt or filly was awarded to Mr R. Dodds, Charlton, whose exhibit, Lady Ray, sire Ray Hope, dam Myra Footprint, had excellent qualifications and good action. Messrs Fleming Bros., Crookston, were also very successful in the female classes and annexed both the championship and reserve championship honours. The championship went to Eden Lady (imp.), sire Ardyne Refiner. This mare was particularly set up, had excellent breeding qualifications and was an attractive mover. She secured the first award in the class for dry mare, four years and upwards, the same exhibitors' mare Gladiola by Scotland’s Success out of Harviestoun Reta (imp.) being second. Eden Lady also won against keen competition in the class for the best action and fastest walking heavy draught mare, while in company with Gladiola she also won the class for the pair of dry mares. Boquhan Electra, which secured the reserve championship ticket, was first in the class for brood mare with foal at foot and pleased the judge because of her bright appearance and her conformation. The second award in this class was secured by Mr J. A. Johnston, whose exhibit was also a classy animal. The two-year-old filly class was strongly contested and the award went to R. Dodds, Charlton, whose exhibit Lady Ray secured the Clydesdale Society’s medal. The second award went to J. Robertson and Sons, Waikoikoi, with a well set up filly by Rosencraig—Springfield Stamp. Another very strong class was that for the mare or filly, two years and upwards bred in the Dominion, the exhibits being very favourably commented upon by the judge who stated that the whole class was a credit to breeders. The first award went to Mr J. A. Johnston, Maitland, whose exhibit Lady Betty by Myra Footprint out

of a Baron Bold mare was a good mover and true to type. Fleming Bros.’ Mona Ambition, won in the ejass for oneyear filly, while the same exhibitors scored’in the class.for mare and two of her progeny, and group of three mares or fillies. James Robertson and Sons secured first honour in the class for pair-of geldings, both exhibits being by Rosencraig.' Rosencraig’s progeny also gained a similar distinction in the class for group of three colts, these being exhibited by Mr A. Thomson, Kelso. The trophy for the most prizes in the draught horse section was won by Fleming Bros., Crookston, who were particularly successful in the classes for both male and female draughts. The previous holder was Mr T. Logan, Otama. Hackneys. The display of hackneys was very creditable, although scarcely as large as could be expected in the Eastern District which has always been famed for its light horses. There was fairly strong competition from outside the province and northern exhibitors were fairly successful. The outstanding horse in the section was exhibited by Mr T. H. Ivey, of Tiinaru, and was considered to be worthy of being exhibited at any show in the Dominion. The first class to draw good entries, was for weight-carrying hack up to 13 stone in which seven pleasing horses were paraded. The winner, exhibited by Mr T. Horne, of Morton Mains, and the other prizewinners were considered to be particularly good quality horses. The largest field in the section consisted of 14 entries in the light hack class, first award going to Mr J. M. Shaw, of Washdyke, with an outstanding hack. Second prize was awarded to Miss D. Mowat, of Dunedin, whose entry, although younger, was very promising. Mr V. J. Albrecht, of Balclutha, exhibited a very attractive cob in the class for 15 hands and under, this horse being a particularly good type and a very free mover. Mr A. R. Johnston, of Waikaka Valley, was the winner of the class for cob, 14 i hands or under, with his prize-winning horse which carried off three first awards in the pony section. There was a good field in the class for lady’s hack which was won by Mr Shaw with a very finely boned and perfectly mannered horse. The judge expressed surprise that Mr Ivey did not exhibit his outstanding horse in other classes than for single harness horse and best turnout both of which he won. Ponies. “Compared with the last time I judged here, the ponies showed a very decided improvement and in all cases there were big classes with very close competition,” said Mr W. E. Hazlett, of Invercargill, after judging the ponies of which there were an unusually large number forward. One feature referred to by the judge was that while there was a very big improvement in cobs and harness horses, small ponies were, in the majority of cases, brought into the ring in too fat a condition to handle properly. There were very large entries in most classes, the total exceeding 15 in one or two cases. Competition was mostly confined to exhibitors from the Eastern District, but one notable exception was the presence of Mr Thomas Gee, of Christchurch, who secured several class awards with his very stylish ponies, Mr Gee will doubtless compete at the Royal Show and his horses should give a good account of themselves in better company. Two pony stallions alone were forward in the class under 14 hands, first award going to Mr James Barclay’s Black Diamond with Mr G. R. Herron’s Prince Charming second. The class for cobs of 14 i hands and under produced a ring of as good a line as could be seen in any part of the country’. The winner was exhibited by Mr A. R. Johnston, of Waikawa Valley, and was a particularly pleasing type and appeared to quite justify the unbeaten show record it possessed. Either of the first three entries in this class would have been hard to beat in any show ring, and the judge had finally to make the award on account of manners, so equal were the others in all other respects. The same applied to the saddle class for boy’s pony in which Mr Johnston’s pony was again the winner. Another outstanding class was the harness event for pony 131 hands and under in which Mr Gee was the winner with Pussyfoot, probably one of the finest dog cart horses to be seen in any show-ring. THE COMPETITIONS. Very keen interest was taken in the various jumping and trotting competitions and the presence of one or two northern horses in the former served to render an added interest to these events. Several of the competitors in the open jumping events gave particularly good performances, but the honour went to Mr W. Hastie’s Mystery, which not only won the Eastern District championship, but also an extra prize for the best hunter to be ridden by a lady. Mr Hastie’s Tanner won the High Jump, Mystery being second. Miss Dawson secured the honour of being the best lady rider. The polo events both in the open and the restrictive class were won by Mr 11. Mclntyre who has held a similar honour on many previous occasions at the Gore Show. A number of military events were staged by the Otago Mounted Rifles and were watched with very keen interest.
