Mr. A. C. Hanlon, of Dunedin, arrived in Invercargill by yesterday’s express. The Hon. P. A. de la Perrelle, Minister of Internal Affairs, and Mr. Kelleher, Undersecretary of Internal Affairs, paid a flying visit to Bluff yesterday. Dr. A. G. Paterson, Director of the Division of School Hygiene, Wellington, arrived in Invercargill yesterday .on a brief visit. She is' a guest at the - Grand Hotel.

Mr. W. J. McKitterick, the newly appointed local manager of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, arrived in Invercargill by yesterday’s express.

Mr. John McDonald, Denbigh Street, Mataura, leaves by. this morning’s express to represent the Mataura Masonic Lodge at the Grand Lodge Conference at Auckland.

A Wanganui telegram records the death of Mr Alexander Donald Mackintosh, chairman of the Wanganui County Council for nine years, chairman of directors of the Okoia Dairy Factory and associated with other local bodies.

Mr. C. S. Longuet, president of the Southland League, Mr. J. S. Dick, secretary, and some ten members of the executive leave this morning for Queenstown to attend the quarterly meeting of the league which is being held at Queenstown this evening. At last night’s meeting of the High School’s Board, the chairman, Mr. R. M. Strang, said he was glad to be able to report that Miss C. A. Brown, who had for some weeks past been seriously ill, was now considerably improved in health. On Thursday evening Messrs. Edie and S. Paul, of the Gore Railway staff, who have been transferred to Riversdale atjd Invercargill respectively, were the guests of other members of the staff at a farewell social. Mr. J. Hamilton presided and made reference to the excellent qualities of the guests. As a token of the esteem is which they were held by their fellow employees, Mr. Edie was presented with a smoker’s companion and a set of military brushes, and Mr. Paul was presented with a tobacco pouch. The following appointments were confirmed at the monthly meeting of the Southland Education Board yesterday: Mr. John A. P. Worthington, headmaster, Isla Bank; Miss Enid F. Ewing, (transfer), assistant, Balfour; Mr. Alfred C. Iggo (transfer), sole teacher, Waipounamu; Miss May H. Speden, assistant, Waituna; Miss Daisy McLelland, first assistant, Tisbury;. Miss Jessie H. Moss (transfer), second assistant,. Tisbury; Mr. W. St. O. Horman, sole teacher, Glenure; Miss Grace E. Macfarlane (transfer), assistant, Pembroke; Miss Evelyn E. S. Leslie, assistant, Hillend South; Miss Gladys Cameron, governess, Slopedown. Mr. Gavin Hall, who passed away last week, was the tenth son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Hall, and was bom at Nightcaps 31 years ago. He received his education at the Nightcaps School, after leaving which he followed different occupations. At the early age of 18 years he enlisted for the Great War, leaving New Zealand with the 6th. Reinforcements. Mr. Hall saw active service both in Gallipoli and France until within a few weeks of the signing of the Armistice. In recognition of his bravery, he was awarded the Military Medal. While convalescent he travelled to Scotland, then crossed to Ireland, where he spent several weeks with relatives. Upon his return to New Zealand, he worked in the Winton District until he departed for Christchurch, where he entered the drapery trade. Mr. Hall later returned to Invercargill where, latterly, in Dee Street he conducted the business of Hail and Co., warehousemen. Some six years ago he married Miss Margaret Calder, the youngest daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Calder of Dipton. The late Mr. Hall possessed a genial personality and, although he led a somewhat busy fife, he found time to devote his activities to other spheres. He was an ardent member of the North Presbyterian Church.
