CONVICTS MUTINY

DEMAND FOR FREEDOM

GUARDS AND VISITOR AS HOSTAGES MURDER THREATENED (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright) (Rec. 8.15 p.m.) New York, October 4. At Cannon City (Colorado) a thousand convicts in the overcrowded State penitentiary rioted and seized a dozen guards and ex-Senator Coalgate, who was visiting the prison, as hostages, holding them in captivity in the prison arsenol. They warned the warden that they would kill the hostages unless allowed their freedom. The warden refused the request, and the prison hangman was murdered and the other hostages were in the greatest danger. Five guards and one convict were killed. The warden’s stenographer summoned the aid of the militia and fire police departments, a thousand armed volunteers also assisting in an endeavour to obtain control, but due to the position of the hostages the warden is unable to decide how to reply to the convicts’ threats.—Australian Press Association. AT LEAST ELEVEN KILLED. (Rec. 9.5 p.m.) New York, October 4. Four guards and from seven to nine convicts are dead as a result of the penitentiary mutiny.—Australian Press Assoc-iation-United Service.
