SOCCER

CLOSE OF SEASON. COMBINED TEAMS DEFEAT MIDDLE. I As a fitting close to the 1929 soccer season in Invercargill, a schoolboys’ game was 1 played at the Showgrounds on Saturday ■ afternoon, at the conclusion of which the boys helpeel to tidy up the grounds and the stand. The boys were then given a little treat in the shape of cakes, confectionery and cordials. The match played was between a team representing the Middle School, the champions of the season, and one chosen from the other schools in the soccer competition. A slippery ground anti the presence of several pools took much of the sparkle out of the play, but some of the movements executed showed the great improvement made during the year by the young players. The Combined Teams established a lead in the first half when D. Morrison goaled with a hard short, but although Middle School attacked very strenuously in the second half, they were unable to score any points. Mr W. Cathcart refereed the match.
