WARSHIP AGROUND

AMERICAN VESSEL

POSSIBILITY OF COMPLETE LOSS

HOLES TORN IN BOW (United Tress Assn. —By Telegraph Copyright.) (Rec. 1.10 a.m.) Shanghai, June 6. The United States vessel Luzon, flagship of the American Yangtse patrol, is in a precarious condition at the breakwater at Woosung at the entrance of Shanghai, where she grounded in dense fog last night when returning from deep-sea target practice in company with the gunboats Helena and Oahu. There arc several gaping holes in the bow, and the forward deck is under water. There is a possibility of the vessel being a complete loss unless salvaging operations are successful before there is any rough weather.

The British cruiser Kent is arriving from Nanking. The British Minister stood by until this morning. Rear-Admiral Craven, commanding the Yangtse flotilla, is on board the Luzon, which was launched at the local dockyard only ten months ago. There is no loss of life.—Australian Press Association.
