GAY CARNIVAL ARRIVES • SOMETHING TO SEE ON SATURDAY. H AND J. SMITH’S WHOLE STAFF DRESS UP FOR WINTER SHOW VISITORS. A magic wand will be waved over Southlands’ Big Store on Saturday morning, turning the massive pile into a carnival fairyland with the whole staff of over 209 dressed in fancj' May Fair costumes. This year every department wears a different costume and at a dress rehearsal held yesterday morning the effect was as gay and bright as it is possible to imagine. The costumes will be worn on Saturday as an entertainment to Winter Show visitors and, as hundreds of remarkable money-sav-ing opportunities will be offered, it is safe to predict that the big store will be crowded from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. The large advertisement on page 9 is well worth reading. The following are some of the costumes to be worn by the staff on Saturday:— John Bull, Chinese, Harlequins, Uncle Sam, Pyjama Girls, Powder Puffs, Indian Girls, Carnival Girls, Windows, Tin Soldiers, Parcel, Post Girls, Joy Bells, Lightning Deliveries,' Walking Advertisements, Pierrots, Dutch Girls and Boys, Black and White Pierrots, Crinoline Ladies, Admirals, Aces, Scotch Girls, Italian Girls, French Girls, American Girls, Irish Colleetis, Britannia, Japanese Girls, Folly, Page Girls, Dolly Vardens and niany, others.
