MAN FOUND DEAD

FOUL FLAY SUSPECTED

TRAGEDY ON A LONELY ROAD SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCES (Per United Press Association.) Opotiki, May 10. The police received word yesterday that the body of Samuel McAleese, an employee of the Public Works Department, was found dead on the Motu road. On an investigation being made extensive injuries to the man’s face and a bullet wound in the chest were found, which points to foul play. The police are reticent in the matter and the inspector and detectives are expected to-day. The bullet wounds were not discovered till the body was admitted to the morgue. Two shirts were on the body and the offside one to the bullet hole must have been buttoned up after the shot was fired. The body was found by another road worker, "Scotty” Lappin. The scene of the t ragefly was at a very lonely spot on a steep road. Papanwa Hill is part of the mountain range between Gisborne and the Bay of Plenty, and reaches a height of 2000 feet. It is a rugged, bush-clad spot. Along the road several roadmen are employed, their little huts being perched in the bush above the roadway. Service cars passed the spot about 12.30 yesterday and according to one driver nothing unusual was noticed.
