DOMINION’S POTATOES
THE AUSTRALIAN EMBARGO. (Per United Press Association.) Waimate, May 9. There seems little probability that the Australian Government will lift the embargo on New Zealand potatoes, according to advice received by Mr J. Bitchener, M.P., from the Minister of Agriculture, the Hon. G. W. Forbes. It is understood the flood damage to the Tasmanian crops is not serious, and as repeated unsuccessful attempts have been made by New Zealand to have the embargo lifted, Mr Forbes considers there is little prospect of such unless pressure is brought to bear on the Commonwealth Government by business people and consumers in Australia. THE SYDNEY 7 VIEWPOINT. Sydney, May 9. Although many Sydney merchants would welcome a withdrawal of the embargo on New Zealand potatoes, it is regarded as improbable that the request of New Zealand growers to have the restriction lifted during June-July-August will be granted. It is contended that if the embargo is once lifted, it will be difficult to reimpose it.— Australian Press Association.
