TOUR OF INSPECTION
WOODLANDS SWAMP AREA. (Per United Press Association.) Hamilton, May 9. The Minister of Lands to-day made an extensive tour of the Woodlands swamp area of 57,000 acres, close to Hamilton, with a view to considering a comprehensive drainage scheme. The Government drainage engineers surveyed the region in 1924 and strongly recommended development at a cost of £152,000. There are about 34,000 acres undeveloped. The Minister was accompanied on the tour by Mr MacMorran, chief drainage engineer, local members of Parliament, representatives of local bodies and commercial organisations.. A conference was held at Gordonton, all speakers supporting the scheme. Mr oung, M.P., asked Mr Forbes would the Government undertake the necessary legislation.
Mr Forbes ’ was non-committal on this point, but promised fullest support to' the necessary local bills. He considered the scheme was one of national importance in connection with closer settlement and increasing production. Regarding financial assistance, he must consult the Minister of Finance.
