THE SOUTHLAND BRANCH. The monthly meeting of the committee of management of the Southland branch of the N.Z.E.I. was held on Saturday, the president, Mr Ralph McDonald, presiding over a full attendance of members. The president extended a welcome to the new members of the committee, Miss E. Salmond and Messrs J. McK. Miller, A. I. Milne and A. Kinross. It was resolved to support the Hawkes Bay branch in its protest against the proposal of the institute to erect offices in Wellington. A member wrote asking if a teacher who has been transferred from a position to one of a similar nature is required to remain two Decembers in the latter position—The secretary was instructed to reply that the date of appointment is reckoned from the time of appointment to the original position.

It was decided to circularize teachers to ascertain how many are prepared to attend a summer school to be held at Stewart Island in January next.

At. the request of the executive of the N.Z.E.I. a number of Southland teachers were nominated to contribute articles on school games to “National Education. ’ Dr. Collier, school medical officer, who has been transferred to Napier, conveyed her thanks to members of the institute for assistance afforded in the carrying out of her duties. Several members spoke in appreciative terms of the doctor’s services, and regret was expressed that she is leaving the district. Mr G. F. Griffiths was appointed by the N.Z.E.I. to conduct a column devoted to mathematics in “National Education.” Mr J. McK. Miller and Mr D. F. Leckie were appointed to represent the Southland Education Institute on the committee of the Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs.
