MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS

INVERCARGILL MAYORALTY. MR MILLER’S CANDIDATURE. Despite the short notice there was a large and enthusiastic attendance of supporters of Mr John Miller in the Y.M.C.A. on Saturdayevening. In addressing the meeting, Mr Miller briefly outlined his policy and expressed the hope that the ratepayers would endorse his actions during the past two years. He mentioned that he had to do a considerable amount of work in the interests of the ratepayers. He also stated that he had secured Victoria Hall for his main address on the Tuesday preceding the poll. Upon the motion of Dr. William Stew-art it was resolved that all present form themselves into a committee and do all possible to secure Mr Miller’s return as mayor. The chairman made special reference to the manner in which the Mayoress (Mrs Miller), had carried out her duties during the past two years, and stated that she had won the approbation of the citizens. An executive was appointed to attend to routine matters, and it was arranged to call a general meeting of supporters on Saturday evening. It was decided to open the campaign at South Invercargill this evening. It was arranged to call a meeting for ladies to-morrow- afternoon. Several offers of the use of cars were received. J. D. CAMPBELL’S SUPPORTERS. A meeting of supporters of Mr J. D. Campbell was held in the Southland League rooms on Saturday evening. There was a good attendance of ladies and gentlemen and at the invitation of the ehairman, Mr Campbell briefly addressed those present, thanking them for their large attendance and giving a short outline of his candidature. Those present formed themselves into different committees and assured Mr Campbell of their support to place him at the top of the poll. This evening Mr Campbell opens his campaign at East Invercargill at the Sylvan Bank Sunday School at eight o’clock. EASTBOURNE NOMINATIONS. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, April 20.

For the Eastbourne Council, Mr H. M. Jones was the only nomination for the Mayoralty. There are eleven nominations for’eight seats on the council.
