MIDDLE SCHOOL

HEATING SYSTEM

BOARD CHAIRMAN AND COMMITTEE MR JONES TO ATTEND MEETING Since the difference between the Middle School Committee and Mr A. W. Jones (chairman of the Education Board) over the financing of the internal heating system of the Middle School was given publicity in the Southland Times, Mr Jones and the Rev. J. Lawson Robinson (chairman of the Middle School Committee) wrote to each other on the subject, Mr Jones desiring permission to attend the householders’ meeting on Tuesday evening and Mr Robinson inviting Mr Jones to attend. The correspondence is published below-. It may be explained that the letters crossed, Mr Jones not knowing of the invitation extended to him and Mr Robinson being unaware of Mr Jones’s request when the letters were written. Rev. Lawson Robinson’s Letter. Invercargill, April 19, 1929. Dear Mr Jones, I am exceedingly sorry that differences have arisen between you as chairman of the Education Board and the Middle School Committee. In view of the publicity given to the matter in this morning’s paper, it has occurred to me that you would like an opportunity of stating your point of view to the householders of the Middle School district. I therefore invite you to be present at the meeting of householders on Tuesday next when I shall give you ample opportunity to make a statement in justification of your recent line of conduct. It may- be that a friendly discussion will do much to settle our differences and bring about a happier state of feeling. I can assure you that every courtesy will be extended to you, and that proper respect and consideration will be shown to you as chairman of the board. I can also assure you of my committee’s desire to work amicably with every member of your board. — I am, Yours sincerely, (Signed) J. Lawson Robinson, Chairman of Middle School Committee. Mr Jones's Letter. Invercargill. April 20, 1929. Rev. J. L. Robinson, Chairman, School Committee, Invercargill Middle. In view of the present controversy that has been instituted by your committee and in view of the fact that my administration as chairman of the Southland Education Board is likel yto be called into question, I will be glad to have your permission to attend the householders’ meeting to be held at the Middle School on Tuesday evening, and your assurance that I will be allowed to reply to any allegations made by you or anv members of your committee at this meeting.

Awaiting your reply, (Signed) A. W. Jones, Chairman.
