SMALLPOX OUTBREAK

FRENCH RESTRICTION LIFTED.

STATEMENT BY HEALTH MINISTER. (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Rugby, April IS. The Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Mr G. ’ Locker-Lampson, stated in the House of Commons to-day that, official confirmation had been received of the suspension by the French Government of the order requiring visitors from England to be vaccinated within the preceding two months.

STATEMENT BY HEALTH MINISTER

Referring to the cause of the order, namely, the outbreak of smallpox aboard the Tuscania which arrived at- Glasgow on April 1, the Hon. Neville Chamberlain, Minister of Health, said that the number of cases among the 1,598 passengers and crew was 45. There had been seven deaths. All patients had been isolated in hospital and all contacts were being kept under supervision. The rigorous action taken in this country to prevent the spread of smallpox from the Tuscania appeared to have proved effective. As the ship arrived 17 days ago any serious risk of a widespread outbreak of the disease was at an end, though it was possible that some secondary cases might arise.—British Official Wireless.
