COMMERCIAL

Times Office, Friday morning.

FINANCE AND TRADE.

LOCAL MARKETS

Fruit and Vegetables.

Heavy supplies of apples reached the fruit marts during the week, mainly parcels of Jonathons and Delicious, and both lines met with a steady demand. Only a few Cox’s Orange Pippin came to hand, but the samples were in splendid order and realized record prices. So far there have not been many Cox’s Orange about. The market could certainly absorb full supplies. Pears are plentiful, consequently prices are low. Consignments of tomatoes are still arriving, but the quality is considerably varied. Good samples are meeting with a solid inquiry, but those affected by frost are difficult to dispose of. Full supplies of Californian oranges and lemons arrived during the week, both lines meeting a very good demand. There are a few cucumbers still coming in, also Cape gooseberries and satisfactory values are ruling in each case. The market is bare of bananas and the position will not be relieved until about the 25th, when a parcel of Fijis is due. The vegetable market is well supplied with pumpkins and marrows. Cabbages, cauliflowers, carrots and parsnips are meeting with a normal demand only. Current prices are approximately as follows:—Apples, dessert, 8/6 to 15/-, according to variety; cookers 5/- to 7/- per 401 b case; pears, 14d to 2Jd per lb; tomatoes, lid to 4d; Californian lemons to 50/- per case; oranges, 50/-; grapes, to 1/5 per lb; Cape gooseberries, 8/- to 10/- per box; pumpkins to 14/- cwt; marrows 14/- cwt; table carrots, to 8/- cwt; carrots for poisoning to 6/6 cwt; cabbages 1/- to 2/6 per dozen; cauliflowers 2/- to 7/-; cucumbers to 2/6 per box; parsnips, IMb; beetroot, lid to 2d lb.

IThe above list of prices is compiled from a range of values obtained from the various merchants in the town. Where prices do not actually coincide a range is quoted.] Market Report. The Waipiata with sugar and general cargo is now due at Bluff on Saturday. The Huntingdon is due at Bluff on Wednesday or Thursday next with salt and general merchandise from west of England ports. The recent frosts in California have damaged the fruit crops to a far greater extent than was anticipated. Latest cables state that all canned fruit prices have been withdrawn temporarily. This in itself is sufficient to show that the canners are uncertain of their position, and when they arc able to quote, prices will be considerably higher.- ' Australia will be able to take advantage of her unfortunate rival’s position and secure good prices for her crop. Buyers should make their forward bookings without delay. Pepper is again active. Prices have advanced a further $d per lb during the last fortnight. Nelson advises that new season’s canned raspberries are now available and are of exceptional quality. BALFOUR STOCK SALE. A FIRM MARKET. There was a fair entry of sheep at yesterday’s stock sale at Balfour, and while the attendance was small, there was a keen demand for most classes of sheep, the presence of one or two outside buyers helping to effect a good clearance. Keen interest was taken in the sale of stud ewes offered by Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co. Ltd. on account, of Mr W. McDonald, of Balfour. The line of 2, 4 and 6-th ewes met with good competition, and were eventually purchased by Mr Fowler, Wendon, at 3Jgns. The failing-mouthed ewes realized l:<gns, and were purchased by Mr L. Healey, McNab, some fairly good lines of ewe lambs were on offer and brought from 24/10 to 26/-, with medium sorts from 23/- to 24/2.
