ALLEGED ASSAULT

SEQUEL TO MOTOR COLLISION.

MAGISTRATE IMPOSES FINE.

(Per United Press Association.)

Wellington, April IS.

A collision between two cars in the Yaita Gorge, the pursuit of one car by the other and subsequent alleged assault, were the elements of two cases heard at the Upper Hutt Magistrate’s Court. William Arthur Gadsby was charged with attempting to pass a car when the road was not clear and his father, Arthur Gadsby, was charged with assaulting John Purvis. The Upper Hutt constable said that the two Gadsbys and the two Purvises called at the station. Purvis senior complained of Gadsby’s car attempting to pass a car in front when they’ saw their car coming in the opposite direction. Gabsby’s turned in but not in time to avoid a collision. Gadsby senior complained that the Purvises were on the wrong side of the road when the collision occurred. The Gadsbys pursued them and stopped the car. Gadsby senior said he was accused of being drunk and passed his open hand against Purvis’s face. Purvis senior alleged he was struck on the face. Gadsby admitted having had a little liquor. The charge against Gadsby junior was dismissed but the father was fined £2 for assault, the magistrate taking into account that he was highly’ excited at the time.
