MATAURA NEWS

W.E.A. CLASS. (From Our Correspondent.) The Mataura W.E.A. commenced its 1929 session on Wednesday evening, when Mr S. G. August, was present to discuss the syllabus for the year. There was a very big attendance, Mr R. McDonald being voted to the chair. It was decided that the class should carry on with the study of literature under the tutorship of Mr August. The alternate Wednesdays would be devoted to the reading of plays instead of the study of economics as in previous sessions. Mr August, explained the system of play-reading adopted in other W.E.A. classes, and it was hoped that the new’ departure would extend the interest in the class. It was decided to invite the Gore Ladies’ Play Reading Club to give a reading on May S.

It was decided that there should be no meeting of the class next week in order that members might be able to give support to a public meeting which is being called for the purpose of discussing a proposal to form a society for the promotion of arts and hobbies. Routine business was transacted, and Miss M. Munro was re-elected secretary. Hearty votes of thanks were accorded Mr August and Miss Munro for their valuable services to the class in the past. The subject for study on next class night will be the Irish playwright, “William Butler Yeats.” Rebekah Lodge. The fortnightly meeting of the Pearl of Mataura Rebekah Lodge was held on Tuesday, Sister O. Leitch, N.G., presiding over a good attendance of members. When routine business had been disposed of the initiation of one candidate took place. Grand Lodge representative, Bro. Dennison reported on the work done at the Grand Ijodge session, receiving an attentive hearing and'being accorded a vote of thanks for his address.
