ANZAC DAY

CHARACTER OF CELEBRATION. ALTERATION SUGGESTED BY GOVERNOR-GENERAL. (Per United Press Association.) Auckland, April 17. Speaking at the returned soldiers’ reunion to-night the Governor-General said he was not quite sure whether, if we were going to keep Anzac Day properly, we should not somewhat alter the character of the celebration.

“I think we are a little inclined to strike a too mournful note and not too solemn a note,” he said. “D think we should try to begin to put the sadness of it all out of our minds and dwell a little more on the glory of the day and the gratitude we feel to the memory of those who fell, our thankfulness for the example they gave to us and our appreciation of the glory they have achieved. The note should be more cheerful than mournful. If we do that it will harmonize a little more with the general feeling as time goes on. Instead of having long speeches the form of ceremony should be rather like that which takes place in lx)ndon on Armistice Day.”
