WINTON COURT

At a sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Winton James Blee was convicted and sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, warrant to be suspended if he pays £3 per month and 3/- per month arrears until £56 10/- has been paid off.

James Hamilton was convicted and fined 10/- with costs 12/- for exposing lice infested sheep for sale. Edward Moyal was convicted and fined 10/- with 12/- costs for exposing lice infested sheep for sale.

William Baird was convicted and fined 20/- and costs 12/- for the same offence. Hamilton and Cook v. E. R. Eason — Judgment by default for £2O 3/4, costs £2 5/-. J. Gullick v. J. H. Botting—Judgment was given for 10/- costs. McLean and Milburn v. M. Cosgrove (South Winton) for £7 0/3, court costs 17/-, solicitor’s fee £1 1/-. McCurdy and Sons v. Eric Taylor, judgment, summons, ordered to pay forthwith £7 1/11 or in default seven days in Invercargill gaol. Alexander Waters v. Charles Arnold Jnr., judgment summons, ordered to pay £5 14/11 or in default five days in Invercargill gaol. Donald Nicholson Jnr. was charged with assaulting William John O’Brien (Winton) by striking him with a fork. Mr Eustace Russell appeared for accused who pleaded not guilty. Detective-Sergeant Hewitt, prosecuted on behalf of the police. Evidence was given at length by William John O’Brien and his two brothers for the police. Dr P. Gow also gave evidence as to the injuries attended to by him for O’Brien. Evidence for the defence (which was a complete denial of the charge) was given by Donald Nicholson Jnr., J. Wakefield and Mrs Angus Nicholson. The Magistrate said the accused would be fined £lO, £5 to go to the complainant with witnesses’ expenses £2 1/-.
