MATAURA BOROUGH

MEETING OF COUNCIL.

'The monthly meeting of the Mataura Borough Council was held on Tuesday and attended by the Mayor (Mr C. D. McConnell) and Councillors W. P. Thorn, C. E. Rowe, J. W. Aitken, A. N. Mac Gibbon, J. Ingram, L. McKelvie, J. Walker, and W. Piercy. Correspondence. C. H. Hargest, secretary Mataura Dairy Factory Company Ltd., wrote stating that in view of the fact that allotment 7 River street, was of no further use to the company it wished to surrender the lease to the council. —Referred to the Finance Committee.

A. D. Currie, secretary, Mataura Volunteer Fire Brigade, wrote requesting that a heater point be fitted in the two bedrooms at the fire station. The heaters would be supplied by the men.—The request was granted. E. G. Wilson, borough engineer, Gore, forwarded plan and specification of a modern convenience.—Held over for consideration by the new council.

E. G. Wilson, borough engineer, wrote regarding sluice valves for the main water pipe line. He submitted prices for same and suggested that they be placed at suitable intervals at the lowest points in the line as certain quantities of drift may now be starting to accumulate. He could not say if any accumulation may be starting but thought it would be a wise precaution to have them inserted.—Referred to the Water and Drainage Committee. , Miss J. Curtin, secretary, Mataura Ladies Hockey Club, wrote asking for permission to use the recreation grounds for hockey and also that the ladies’ dressing room be cleaned out. The writer also requested that the grass be cut on the playing area. The requests were granted. The district engineer, New Zealand Radways, Invercargill, forwarded a lengthy circural under the Government Railways Amendment Act, 1928 with reference to restrictions on motor traffic at railway crossings which come into force on June 1, 1929. Referred to the new council.

The New Zealand Paper Mills Ltd wrote with reference to the building extensions at the mill and asked leave to proceed with that part shown on submitted layout plan as a motor garage and said to encroach on the adjoining borough property. Consent was also asked for the laying a concrete traffic way extending from the motor garage to the weighbridge table, and in the forming of a roadway on the river chainage in the river front of the chopper-house. —Permission was granted during the pleasure of the council. L. McKelvie, secretary. Mataura R.S.A., wrote inviting the council to take part in Anzac Day parade. The parade would lea'c the council chambers at 1.45 p.tn. The invitation was accepted. . , R. S. Green, secretary, Eastern District Rugby Football Sub-Union, applied for permission to use the Mat aura Domain wit h the right to charge for admission on six days during the coming football season. Granted. The secretary, Mataura Town Band, wrote asking the council to install the water supply and a flush down at the bandroom. ■ Referred to Drainage Committee to report. Reports. The special committee reported having drafted a letter in reply to the petition regarding the pavilion on the recreation grounds, the letter to be forwarded to the person whose signature heads the petition. —Adopted. . The Sanitation and Drainage Committee recommended that a charge of £2 be made for the extraordinary water supply to the merry-go-round; that the finance committee make provision on the estimates for the ensuing year for the sum of £2OO to be used for advances to those requiring financial assistance for the installation of water closets, on terms set out in this committee's report of January 9, 1929. —Adopted. The Works Committee recommended that an estimate of the cost of tar-sealing Bridge street from the railway crossing to _ the bridge be supplied by the borough engineer, with a view of having the work done bynext summer.—Adopted. The Finance and Lighting Committee recommended that the application of the meter reader for an increase in the fee for meter reading be granted to the extent of 15/- per reading. That the accounts as per schedule amounting to £227 5/4 be passed for payment. That the registration fee for bakehouses and butchers’ shops be 10/- and hairdressers 5/- per annum, in accordance with the regulations under the Health Act, 1920.—Adopted. General. It was resolved that the usual overdraft of £l4OO be arranged for at the Bank of New Zealand. It was also resolved that, the council procure photographic views taken during the recent school jubilee celebrations. The Mayor said that was the last meeting of the council, and he wished to thank all the councillors for the support given him during his term of office. They had carried on well and achieved some good work. He stated that he intended to come out again, and no doubt if elected he would receive the same support from the councillors as he had done. He had heard a rumour that he was anxious to get another loan and stated that he had been against any further loans for the past two years. He hoped that whoever stood against him would put up a fair and above board fight. Cr. Ingram took the opportunity of thanking his colleagues who were associated with him on the committee on which he had acted for their support. Cr. Aitken also thanked his colleagues on his committee for their support. The council had been a happy family and had done good work. Cr. Walker voiced his appreciation of the support accorded him by his committee, and hoped that the incoming council would receive the same support. Cr. Mac Gibbon said he had enjoyed the meetings. They had had their differences, but it would not be worth -while coming to the meetings if they'did not have these differences. If returned again he would endeavour to do his duty to the ratepayers. Cr. McKelvie also returned thanks and stated that unfortunately he could not sec his way clear to seek re-election as he had not the time to devote to the work.
