BASKETBALL

YESTERDAY’S MATCHES. Games in the second round of the Wednesday competition were played at the Waihopai Sports’ Grounds yesterday. Three senior and three intermediate matches were played while a senior and an intermediate match were played at Makarewa. Rain fell during the earlier part of the afternoon, but play was not affected. SENIORS. Pirates (7) v. St. Mary’s (2). Play at the beginning of this game was inclined to be slow, but both teams became more active in the second half and the passing improved considerably. Players in both teams showed a tendency to run with the ball. St. Mary’s girls must learn to watch where they are passing, several times they threw the ball into the hands of their opponents. St Mary’s centres obtained the ball fnftn the first throw, but K. Hazlett (Pirates) intervened and passed to D. Roberts, who passed to Pirates’ goal. A Fox (St'. Mary’s) obtained the ball and passed to P. Murfitt in the. centre third. The ball then went from Z. Taylor to M. Cook and M. Shepherd, who scored. Pirates’ centres obtained the ball at the next throw, and sent it to their goal third where A. Abbey-Jones scored. A. Abbey-Jones then scored two goals for Pirates in quick succession, making the score, Pirates (3) v. St. Mary’s (1). In slow passing movements the ball was sent from goal to goal, F. Murdoch (Pirates) at last securing, and passing to M. Milne, w’ho scored. St. Mary's shooting third then became the centre of play but the goal throwers found difficulty in getting away from the opposing defences who were interecepting well. From a throw in, A. Roberts obtained the ball and passed to B. Jones. From this player, the ball went to C. Garth, D. Roberts, A. Abbey-Jones and M. Milne, who was successful in scoring. M. Shepherd scored for St. Mary’s and A. Abbey-Jones for Pirates before half time. Pirates (6), St. Mary’s (2). Play in the second half improved considerably, although the shoots of both teams missed many opportunities of scoring. The one goal in this half was scored for Pirates by A. Abbey-Jones. Mrs Batchelor controlled the game. Rata (29) v. Collegiate (II).

From the first whistle the match was full of interest, the Rata team giving an especially good exhibition of quick passing and accurate shooting. The Collegiate team was also responsible for some good passing movements, but the players were not as sure of the ball as the members of the Rata team.

E. Shepherd (Collegiate) obtained the ball after the first whistle, and passed to M. Donaldson, M. Greenwood, M. Henry and K. Shaw, who scored. Play was then transferred to the Rata goal where R. Murdoch obtained the ball from a swift pass from S. Murdoch, and made an unsuccessful attempt at goal. The ball went out of play, but R. Murdoch secured it from the throw in, and scored. Within a very short space of time, R. Murdoch again scored. The ball passed from the centre to the Collegiate goal but L. Hallamore (Rata) intercepted a pass between M. Henry and K. Shaw (Collegiate) and passed the ball to the centre. From this third, the ball was sent by a series of quick passes to the goal where M. Rodger scored. In rapid succession, S. Murdoch and R. Murdoch each scored two more goals, making the score Rata (7), Collegiate (1). From the centre the ball passed to the Collegiate goal, where M. Crisp scored. The ball again returned to the Collegiate goal but went out of play. L. Hallamore (Rata) threw the ball back on to the court, G. Bamford securing, and passing to P. Kidston, M. Royds, I. Foster, S. Murdoch and M. Rodger whose attempt at goal was successful. A goal for Collegiate was scored by K. Shaw and was followed by another goal for Rata, scored by M. Rodger. R. Murdoch scored three more goals for Rata and M. Henry one for Collegiate before the half-time whistle. Rata (12), Collegiate (5).

Early in the second half, R. Murdoch scored and from the succeeding throw, M. Rodger also scored for Rata. Play remained for a time at Collegiate goal, but the Rata defence prevented the shoots from scoring and an excellent- display of passing by the Rata players resulted in another goal, scored by S. Murdoch. M. Rodger scored the next goal for Rata. From the next throw, the ball was returned to the Rata goal, where it went out of play. P. Sloan secured from the throw in and the ball was passed to the Collegiate goal where K. Shaw scored. S. Murdoch scored three more goals for Rata, M. Rodger two and R. Murdoch one, before K. Shaw scored for Collegiate. Another two more goals had been scored for Rata before another goal was added to the Collegiate score. Four more goals were added to the Rata score, after which K. Shaw scored three goals in rapid succession for Collegiate. S. Murdoch scored the final goal for Rata, just before the whistle. Mrs R. S. Mclnnes controlled the game. Kiwi (27) v. St. Peter’s (2).

St. Peter’s put up a good fight against the Kiwi team, but were soon overwhelmed. The chief drawback of the St. Peter’s team is lack of experience, but if the players remain keen they will soon make progress. St. Peter’s goal-throwers were unable to lose the opposing defences, and made iittle use of the ball when they secured it. Kiwi played a bright game, the shooting third being especially active. K. Jones scored some brilliant goals. The half-time score was 12 —1 in favour of Kiwi. Mrs Batchelor acted as referee. INTERMEDIATE. Rata (18) v. Bluff (4). The members of the Rata team were playing well up to form and had the better of the game from the beginning. Rata shoots did some good work, P. Cunliffc scoring some excellent goals. The passing of the Rata team was of a high standard. The passing of the Bluff team was slower and was spoiled by the height to which the ball was thrown. The Bluff jumping centre is an active player. Kiwi (II) v. Pirates (9). This game was keenly contested and is easily the best intermediate match that has yet. been played. Both teams were keen and energetic. The passing was fast, but was spoiled at times by long throws. Pirates played especially well in the second half, scoring two more goals than Kiwi. Towards the end of the match both teams were shooting wildly. D. Lainchbury, Kiwi jumping centre, played an outstanding game. The half-time score was 7—3 in favour of Kiwi. Miss Cosette Bailey controlled the game. (Collegiate (7) v. Central Methodist (4). The Central Methodist team has greatly improved and played a good game against Collegiate. Members of Ccfflegiate centre third were especially strong. MAKAREWA v. PROGRESSIVE. The following are the results of the basketball matches played at Makarewa yesterday between the Makarewa and Progressive teams: Senior. Makarewa (28) v. Progressive (10). Intermediate. Makarewa (18) v. Progressive (3). The matches were refereed by Mr Geddes.
