WAIKAKA NOTES

(From Our Correspondent.) The weather still continues to be changeable. In the early hours of Thursday morning a very fierce gale was experienced and many sheds, cow byres, etc., were blown down. A boxing class has now been formed in Waikaka and meets every Wednesday. A few of the young men and school boys of the district have enrolled and the class is thus receiving good support. Quite a gloom was cast over the township when it became known that Mrs A. Matheson had passed away. The deceased who was known to young and old as “old Lady Matheson” was one of the oldest residents and was. loved and respected by all She always had a kindly smile and word for everyone she met and she will be very much missed by all who knew her. On Wednesday afternoon the Tennis Club held their opening for the season. The day was fine although a slight breeze blew during the afternoon. At a suitable interval a dainty afternoon tea was served at which were present the members of the Women’s Institute who were holding a meeting in the pavilion. At the conclusion of the afternoon tea Mrs Gutschlag on behalf of the Women’s Institute thanked the members of the Tennis Club for their invitation to partake of afternoon tea and wished them every success for the future. During the afternoon Mr Payne, president of the club, declared the court open for the season and congratulated the members on the successful year’s work just completed. Those playing tennis were: Mr and Mrs Telfer (Gore), Mr and Mrs Payne, Misses Corcoran (2), Gardyne, Cummings, Green, Byars, Turnbull, Asher, Paterson, Henderson ; the Rev. M.
