SOUTH RIVERTON

RATEPAYERS’ ASSOCIATION. The South Riverton Ratepayers Association held its monthly meeting in More’s Hall on Thursday, November 8, six members being present. Mr J. C. Templeton was in the chair. A letter was read and received from the council regarding £lO donated to the Southland League and also correspondence concerning motor lorry regulations from Minister of Works and Prime Minister. Interesting replies were received from the South Island Motor Union to the president’s letter in reference to the Orepuki Shale Works. Letters were also received from Adam Hamilton and the Minister of Mines to the effect that there is a likelihood of important developments taking place in the near future to mine and treat the shale. A letter was received from Mr John Stevenson, Waianawa, which stated that the Orepuki shale works would produce 38 to 40 gallons of oil to the ton, also benzine, ! naptha and petrol; besides tar, grease and i other bi-products. It was stated that the tar products could be utilized for the tar sealing of roads at a reasonable price. j A communication from the South Island Motor Union stated that Professor Speight, of Christchurch, who is familiar with the I shale works, is making further inquiries into the matter, and possible production of oil. An option had been granted to an English syndicate to work the shale and an expert was now on his way out from England to investigate the possibilities of the I field.
