BLUFF NOTES

NEW SPORTS PAVLION. OFFICIAL OPENING CEREMONY. Before a small attendance the new sports pavilion on the recreation grounds, Bluff, was officially opened by the Mayor, Dr. J. Torrance, on Saturday afternoon. Before calling on the Mayor to speak, Mr J. Fletcher detailed the steps that had been taken to raise funds for the building of the pavilion—the Princess Carnival run jointly with the Borough Council. He said the sports interests were under a big debt of gratitude to Mr D. Parry, who had conceived the idea in the first place, and had been in no small way responsible for carrying it through to a successful issue. The result of the money-raising efforts was that the building was handed over to the cricket and football clubs free of debt. He concluded by thanking the ladies on the various princess committees and their supporters for the good work they had done. The Mayor, who at the same time declared the cricket season open, said the pavilion would prove a great convenience to cricketers and footballers, equipped as it was with water, electric light and showers. The cost was somewhere about £220. A fence was to be erected some distance along the southern end of the ground which would stop pedestrians from walking over the cricket pitch. He, too, thanked the ladies for their work in connection with the carnival. He hoped that the cricket club would experience a good season. In concluding he handed the key of the pavilion to the president of the Cricket Club, Mr G. R. George. Mr George traced the gradual improvements that had been made to the grounds and the area generally during the past. He urged the younger people to take every care of the building as it belonged to them. Mr A. E. Budd, on behalf of the Football Club, also spoke thanking the people of Bluff for what they had done to make the pavilion possible. Afternoon tea was handed round and a friendly cricket match was played to mark the opening of the season.
