SNOW AT GORE

RIVERS HIGH. EFFECT ON LAMBING. (From Our Correspondent.) Following on a heavy fall of rain, which lasted for some three or four hours, snow fell at Gore early on Saturday morning coating the ground and roofs to a depth of slightly over an inch. The fall was experienced throughout the district and at Glenaray there were four inches of snow. At Waikaia and Lumsden there was a fall of three inches, but at Balfour only about 1A inches fell. There was only a slight fall at Riversdale and comparatively little fell at Knapdale. After the snow the weather cleared to some extent and the snow thawed rapidly. Late on Saturday afternoon the Mataura River at Gore was about four feet above normal and a further rise is probable. The Waikaka stream was running practically bank high, while the Waimea was also considerably above its normal level. Lambing is now general and during the past week some fairly heavy losses have been reported as a result of the unfavourable conditions. Generally speaking, however, the lambing percentages should be good and farmers in different parts of the Eastern District have remarked that it is many years since they could remember having seen so many twins from two-tooth
