NEW SOUNDING DEVICI
SPEEDIER SYSTEM INVENTED. SUCCESSFUL EXPERIMENTS. (Rec. 8.45 p.m.i London, October 12. The Daily Mail says that Mr Giles Stedman, navigator of the Leviathan, reports successful trans-Atlantic experiments with a fathometer apparatus determining depth in a fraction of a second compared with five to 15 minutes required for each sounding under the former system. A hammer fitted to the ship’s keel strikes a diaphragm causing the emission of a series of sound waves which travel to the ocean bed, return to the ship and actuate a hydrophone, producing a streak of light on the chart room indicator revealing the depth of the water on the dial. Soundings can be taken without slowing down.—United Service.
