HEAVY DAMAGE
VARNISH FACTORY GUTTED. (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Rugby, October 12. Damage estimated at over £lOO,OOO was caused by fire at a wallpaper and varnish factory in Chiswick yesterday. Over 43 fire engines were engaged and firemen and ambulance men stood by throughout the night. Efforts to prevent the flames fropi reaching a nearby public library and large garage where petrol was stored in underground tanks were successful, but as a precautionary measure 28,000 volumes were removed from the library. Many firemen were overcome in the fight, which lasted over 12 hours.—British Official Wireless.
