BOWLS
THE GORE CLUB. OFFICIAL OPENING. (From Our Correspondent.) The official opening of the Gore Bowling Club’s green for the 1928-29 season was held yesterday afternoon, and although the weather conditions were not very favourable, a large number of club members and visiting players from the Hokonui Club were present. The president, Mr W. Baker, in officially declaring the season opened, stated that it afforded him a great deal of pleasure to welcome visitors, new members and old members of the club. The coming season promised to be a good one for the club. The green was looking exceptionally well, and was proof that the action of the committee in extending the drainage had been a wise one. During the coming season bowling in Gore was going to be very keen and members would have to put their best into the game if they desired to uphold their successes of last year. The present committee of the club purposed fostering the social side of the game by whenever possible arranging home-and-home fixtures with other district clubs, which were not in the interclub competitions. This should be the means of enabling more members to join in match play and of promoting a friendly spirit among the clubs. He hoped that the 1928-29 season would be a very successful one for the club. Mrs W. Baker rolled the first! bowl which, in accordance with the time-honoured custom, was a “toucher.” Teams representing the President and Vice-president were chosen and a number of players took advantage of the opportunity to play their first game of the season.
