GORE FIRE BRIGADE
MONTHLY MEETING. The regular monthly meeting of the Gore Fire Brigade on Tuesday night was attended by a good muster of members, Captain F. Wallis presiding. Correspondence was received from the town clerk, Gore, with reference to the steps being taken to place the position of the town from an insurance point of view before the Fire Underwriters’ Association. The Southern Districts Association advised that the annual meeting would be held at Mosgiel on November 16. Lieutenant H. G. Wallis was nominated for the office of president, Fireman I. Martin as vice-president, and Fireman L. Thomson as auditor. Captain Wallis reported on the steps taken for the formation of the fire police. Six prominent citizens of the town had undertaken the duties for the assistance of the brigade at outbreaks of fire, and it was decided that the members of the fire police be elected honorary members of the fire brigade. A discussion ensued as to the advisability of ringing the firebell in cases of fire, the general opinion being that the bell allowed the general public to race up in large numbers, which was a great hindrance to the brigade in the performance of its duties, the motor traffic on the roads being the greatest difficulty. A committee was appointed to report to the next meeting. The foreman rforted that Messrs Trusler and Whitehead had donated gramophone records to the station, and a vote of thanks was passed to these gentlemen for their thoughtfulness. Mr G. Allison was elected a member of the brigade to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Fireman George Smith (transferred).
