HERD TESTING

SOUTHLAND ASSOCIATION. At a well attended meeting on Saturday of the directors of the Southland Herd Testing Association, the chairman (Mr G. R. Herron) reported on the business transacted at the recent meeting of the Herd Testing Federation at Palmerston North. This, he said, had been the best attended meeting yet held by the federation, every association but one being represented. Professor Riddell of the Massey Agricultural College had given an interesting address dealing with various phases of herd testing. Incidently he had reviewed exhaustive experiments to ascertain what advantage could be gained by farmers altering milking hours in anticipation of the visit of the tester, but it had been found that in all instances the farmer lost by such practice. While at the meeting, the speaker had arranged for Mr Hume, organizer of the Waikato Association, to visit Southland early in August to address a series of meetings. Tentative arrangements for the visit of Mr Hume were discussed and the matter referred to directors to make further suggestions. The annual meeting was fixed for Saturday, July 21. Numerous other matters of a routine nature were discussed and dealt with.
