FARMERS’ SOCIAL

GATHERING AT GORE. WOMEN’S DIVISION FUNCTION. The annual social organized under the auspices of the Gore branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the Gaiety Hall on Friday evening. Despite the unpleasant weather conditions, some 160 people from all parts of the district were present, and the function proved to be a most enjoyable one. Mrs Henry Smith (Waikaka Valley) in a brief speech welcomed the farmers and their town friends and expressed gratification at the number present on such a stormy night. She expressed the opinion that the social hour spent together would be both pleasant and profitable. A telegram wishing the committee every success with the social was received Miss Bessie Byars (Auckland), the first secretary of the branch. Apologies were received from Mfr Adam Hamilton, M.P., and Mrs Hamilton, Mr J. R. Hamilton, M.P., and Mrs Hamilton, Mr D. McDougall (Mayor of Gore), Mr C. D. McConnell (Mayor of Mataura), Mr A. L. Adamson (provincial secretary), Mr and Mrs Walter Gee and Mr and Mrs J. Hunter. A varied programme of musical items, community singing, games and dances was expeditiously put through, Mr G. W. MacKay (Otama) being in charge of the games, while Mr R. Cumming (Waikaka Valley) was Master of Ceremonies for the dances. The music for the games was supplied by Misses Morrison and McPhail, and for the dances the pianola was used with conspicuous success.

During the evening, vocal solos were contributed by Miss M. Cunningham (3) and Mr A. Jones (4), Mrs T. McPhail playing the accompaniments. A dainty supper was served by the staff of Milne’s Tea Rooms.

Mr E. Bowmar, in a speech of appreciation to the ladies, complimented them on the excellent entertainment and on the splendid work they were performing in the interests of the Farmers’ Union.

The singing of “Auld Lang Syne” and the National Anthem concluded a most enjoyable function.
