HERD TESTING
SOUTHLAND ASSOCIATION. RETURNS FOR THE SEASON. The returns for the past season of the Southland Herd-Testing Association show that a greater number of herds were tested this year than previously while a slight increase is to be noted in the average test. The details are as follows:
The summary for the whole of the groups is as follows:—184 herds with 6925 herds gave an average of 224.981bs butter-fat for 221 days. These figures do not include “A” class cows under 100 days in milk, “B” class cows withdrawn from the test under 3001bs of butter-fat, and cows where the owners take samples and weights of milk. The highest herd for the season was one of 34 cows yielding an average of 358.821bs butter-fat for 232 days. The lowest herd comprised 27 cows which yielded 130.501bs butter-fat for 198 days. The highest cows yielded respectively 571.111bs butter-fat for 310 days and 563.01 lbs for 243 days. The lowest cow yielded 91.371bs for 250 days. Previous averages have been as follows: Herds. Cows. During the last season a total of 9300 cows in all classes were tested as follows: Testers taking samples of weights, 189 herds with 7907 cows; and owners taking samples of weights, 99 herds with 1393 cows.
