SATURDAY’S GAMES.

Under decidedly unpleasant weather conditipns, the senior and intermediate matches of the Saturday competition were played on Waihopai courts. Good basketball, under the circumstances was almost impossible, but some of the matches were brightened by brilliant flashes of play. The following are the results:— RATA (12) v. COLLEGIATE (3).

Collegiate did not play up to its usual standard, while the members of the Rata team were well on their game, and were combining and passing well, Collegiate defence were playing well and frustrated many of the attempts of the Rata shoots. The first goal was scored for Rata by S. Murdoch, who secured a pass from B. Wall. Play was transferred by means of L. Stratton and M. Greenwood, to the Collegiate goal, but the shoots failed to score. From G. Basstian (Rata) the ball was passed to the centre, and the shooting thirds, with no increase in score. Soon after S. Murdoch scored again. From the centre the ball returned to the Rata goal, where I. McDonald scored. Rata (3), Collegiate (0).

Play remained in the centre -third for some time after the throw up, but a Collegiate player finally obtained the ball and passed to the goal. Rata defence intervened and the ball returned to the centre where M. Royds secured and passed to S. Murdoch who scored. Play returned to the Collegiate goal, but the shoots failed to score. Rata players again secured and passed to their goal, but play had to be suspended for three minutes owing to a heavy shower of rain. When play was resumed, M. Greenwood (Collegiate) secured, and play returned to Collegiate goal, with no score. M. Shand saved and passed the ball to the centre. It was passed from this third to the goal, where B. Wall secured and scored. S. Murdoch scored from the next throw up. When play was transferred to the Collegiate goal M. Humphreys scored from a pass from R. McGill. The halftime score was Rata (6), Collegiate (1). Collegiate secured from the throw up, but although play was in their centre third, no score was made. The ball went out of play and M. Shand catching, passed to M. Royds, who passed to S. Murdoch. This player passed to B. Wall who scored. Play again returned to Rata goal, but K. Maloney (Collegiate) saved and passed to E. Hughes. This player’s attempts to get the ball to the centre third were unavailing, and B. Wall securing, scored again. Rata secured at the throw up and the ball was passed from M. Basstian, to M. Royds and S. Murdoch. V. Cloughley saved a goal, and play returned to the centre. Here M. Royds obtained and passed to B. Wall who scored. M. Greenwood caught the ball at the throw up and passed to L. Stratton who passed to E. Botherway. This player attempted a goal, but was unsuccessful. M. Humphreys obtained and scored. Rata (9), Collegiate (2). From the centre, play returned to the Rata goal, but V. Cloughley saved and passed to the centre. M. Royds intercepted and passed to S. Murdoch who failed to score. E. Hughes (Collegiate) obtained and passed to D. Deegan. From this player, the ball went to M. Greenwood and M. Humphreys. M. Shand intervened and play returned to Rata goal where B. Wall scored from a pass from I. McDonald. Within a few mpiutes S. Murdoch had scored again. Play was transferred to the Collegiate goal from the throw up, and M. Humphreys scored. Rata secured and passed to the goal, but E. Hughes saved and play returned to the centre. D. Deegan secured and passed to Collegiate goal, but M. Shand saved, and from some quick passing to the Rata shooting third, B. Wall scored the final goal of the afternoon. Rata (12), Collegiate (3). BLUFF (11) v. PIRATES (6). Pirates, with only eight players, played one girl short in the centre third, during the first half. In the second half, M. Williamson was transferred from the Pirates goal to the centre third, where she played jumping centre. This proved effective and play was much better in this half. Pirates secured the ball from the throw-up and passed to the shooting third. There 'was no score and play returned to the centre, where B. Bailey, securing, passed to the Bluff goal. Pirates’ defence intervened and the ball passed to the shooting third. The Pirates shoots attempted, but failed and the ball went out. C. Wiig obtained from the throwin and passed to I. Johnston. From the player the ball was passed to L. Gilson and P. Calder, who scored. From the throw-up the ball was passed to the Pirates goal, but there was no score. Bluff defence secured and passed to the centre, where B. Bailey obtained and passed to E. Albertson. From this player the ball went to P. Calder and L. Gilson, who scored. From the throw-up, play again returned to the Bluff goal, where L. Gilson scored. Pirates secured the ball at the centre and E. McKenzie passed to M. Williamson, who failed to score. C. Wiig obtained and passed to the centre. From this third the ball was passed to the goal, where E. Albertson obtained, but failed to score. P. Calder secured the ball and scored. Bluff secured at the throwup, but E. McKenzie intercepted and play returned to the Pirates’ shooting third. Bluff defence intervened and S. Vickery passed to B. Bailey, who passed to L. Gilson. This player failed to score, but P. Calder caught the ball and scored. Bluff (5); Pirates (0). From the centre play was transferred to Pirates’ gogl, but no score was made, and the ball went out of play. S. Vickery obtained from the throw-in, and passed to B. Bailey. From this player the ball was passed to C. Fowler and L. Gilson, the latter scoring. Bluff (6); Pirates (0). Within the next few minutes L. Gilson and P. Calder scored one goal each for Bluff. From the throw-up play returned to the Bluff goal, where E. Albertson attempted, but failed to score, Bluff were awarded a free throw, but no score resulted. B. Bailey secured in the centre and passed to C. Fowler, who passed to P. Calder, a goal resulting G. Marshall secured for Pirates at the throwup and the ball was passed to goal, where A. Jones scored. Bluff (9); Pirates (1). This was the half-time score.

Pirates secured from the centre throw, in the second half, and play was transferred to Pirates goal, where F. Todd scored. From the centre throw-up M. Williamson again obtained for Pirates and passed to E. McKenzie, who passed to F. Todd, another score resulting. Play changed to the Bluff goal, where L. Gilson scored. This was followed within the next few minutes by a score from P. Calder. Bluff (11); Pirates (3). Pirates secured the ball at the centre and passed to the goal, where F. Todd scored twice in quick succession. Bluff secured the ball at the centre, but M. Williamson intervened and passed to A. Jones, who passed to F. Todd, who scored the final goal of the game. Bluff (11) ; Pirates (6).

MAKAREWA (10) v. ST. MARY’S (1). Rain fell most of the time, during which this match was in progress. D. Dennis (Makarewa) was unable to play and her place was taken by B. Wright, who usually plays shoot. E. Ward made her first appearance in the team and played in the shooting third. J. Cahill was absent from the St. Mary’s team and her place was taken by M. Cook. K. Lynch played in M. Cook’s place. St. Mary’s played a much improved game, but Makarewa had the better of the match. N. Beer scored the first goal for Makarewa. The St. Mary’s shoots attempted to score, but were unsuccessful and play returned to the Makarewa goal, where L. Ward scored twice in quick succession. Makarewa (13) ; St. Mary’s (0). When the half-time whistle blew the score was unaltered. Makarewa secured the ball at the centre in the second half, and M. Wright passed to N. Beer, who attempted to score. She was unsuccessful, but E. Ward obtained the ball and scored. L. Ward scored for Makarewa within the next few minutes. St. Mary’s secured the ball at the throw-up, and M. Cooper passed to M. Mahoney, who passed to D. Stone, the latter scoring. N. Beer scored the next three goals for Makarewa. From the centre M. Wright passed to R. Spencer, who passed to E. Ward. The latter’s attempt to score failed, but L. Ward

secured and scored. N. Beer scored again before the end of the match. Makarewa (10); St. Mary’s (1). INTERMEDIATE. MAKAREWA (4) v. COLLEGIATE (4). This was a very even game, and in good weather Would have been interesting. The court was in a worse condition than the senior one, and the players at times found it impossible to hold the ball. The Collegiate defences combined well and played a good sound game. ROSEDALE (3) v. ST. PETER’S (2). This was also a close match. The combination of the Rosedale team was, if anything, a little better than that of their opponents. REPRESENTATIVE TEAM. The representative team will be selected from the following players:— B. Referees are again requested to send in to the secretary results, accompanied by a short criticism of matches. FINAL OF CARNIVAL. Despite the unfavourable weather, a large crowd of people were present in the Victoria Hall on Saturday afternoon and evening for the final day of the Basketball Carnival. The crowd was especially enthusiastic on Saturday evening and when the selling had been concluded at 10.30 p.m. dancing continued in the hall until midnight. The amount realized was more than that required to send a representative team to Auckland and the promoters of the carnival and those who worked so enthusiastically for it have every reason to be pleased with the success of their efforts. During the afternoon a baby show was held and the twenty-one entrants were judged by Miss Arnold, matron of St. Helen’s, assisted by Miss Jamieson. Norman McFarlane, four months old, was judged the most perfect baby in the room, while Rowena Moore, seven months old, was given the prize for the best baby girl. A special prize was given to Lloyd Rees, eighteen months of age. The result of the competition for the club that sold most votes resulted as follows:—Rata (3622); Bluff (2789); St. Peter’s (2728); Progressive (1281); Pirates (1010); Kiwi (942); St. Mary’s (942); Collegiate (752) ;, Central Methodist (408). The basketball, the prize for the senior club raising the most money was awarded to Kiwi who raised £36 6/4, while the prize of £1 for the intermediate club with the most money was awarded to Progressive with £23 14/7.
