THE SUGAR TAX

DEBATE IN COMMONS

CRITICISM OF BUDGET PROPOSALS AN AMENDMENT DEFEATED (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright.) London, June 26. In the House of Commons, in committee on the Finance Bill, Mr Alexander’s amendihent to repeal the sugar tax is the subject of a lively debate, in which Mr Philip Snowden asserted that the sugar market had been manipulated in order to bamboozle the public into the belief that consumers would benefit from the Budget reduction of the duty on raw sugar. Mr Winston Churchill, replying, admitted that a few days before the Budget appeared he realized that there had been a leakage of information, and he thought of dropping the project. He found, however, that there were many interests to be consulted on the matter, so he included the reduction of the duty. The amendment was defeated and clause 4 was carried by 258 votes to 124 —Australian Press Association—United Service.
