LADIES’ HOCKEY

THREE INTERESTING GAMES. COLLEGIATE A DEFEATS SCHOOL. A better attendance of the public than has been the case for some time watched three interesting games at Queen’s Park yesterday afternoon. The most popular game was the Collegiate-High School fixture in which a better game was played than the score of 14-nil in favour of Collegiate indicates. High School played a good game, but could do nothing against the sweeping attack of the Collegiate forwards. In the first minute of play, Miss M. Mclntyre secured and made a fine forward rush, passing to Miss I. Stewart who scored. From the bully-off, High School carried the ball down into Collegiate’s territory. However, from a long corner in Collegiate’s quarters, Miss I. Bell secured, and carrying the ball down the line, centred it to Mrs Gilman, who scored. From a free hit to Collegiate near the circle, Miss C. McGregor passed to Miss M. Hislop, who got the ball past the goalie with a good shot. Shortly after, Mrs Gilman also succeeded with a hard shot, and brought the score to —Collegiate 4, High School 0. Some time afterwards, Miss Stewart made a fine rush, the High School goalie stepped out. just grazed the ball and Miss Stewart put it through. From a long corner in High School territory, Miss Stewart, receiving from Miss Bell, made the score—Collegiate 6, High School 0. Just before half-time, Miss Bell secured, and in an irresistible forward rush, passed to Miss M. Hislop, who in turn handed it over to Miss Mclntyre at the right moment. Finally, just near the line, Miss Mclntyre centred to Miss N. Thomas who scored. At half-time, the score remained at—Collegiate 7, High School 0. In the second half, Miss M. Hislop scored 5, Mrs Gilman 1 and Miss Stewart 1, so that the final score was —Collegiate 14, High School 0. The following teams took the field:— Collegiate—Misses O. Stott; I. Burrell, R. Burt; C. McGregor, K. Murray, N. Thomas; I. Bell, I. Stewart, M. Hislop, Mrs Gilman and Miss M. Mclntyre. High School—Misses E. Buckingham; H. Baird, R. Gray; G. Hughes, M. Woods, J. Anderson; J. Chalmers, E. Kerse, E. Brumby, P. Small, D. Walker. INVERCARGILL v. COLLEGIATE B. The Invercargill-Collegiate B match, although fairly interesting in the earlier stages, did not present very scientific hockey and indeed in the later stages of the game degenerated into more of a happy-go-lucky kind of game in which neither side exerted itself over-much. Invercargill played three short and Collegiate B four short. The outstanding features of the game were the excellent work of Misses Green, Parry and Sandri among Invercargill’s forwards and the prevalence of offrside play. The last may be partly explained by the fact that both teams were playing short. In the first half, five goals stood to the credit of Invercargill, every one being scored by Miss Sandri, although she was assisted in all of them by her fellow forwards. In the second half, Collegiate rallied slightly and began carrying the play into Invercargill territory. Miss Eva Hope made some good saves, but finally Miss E. Smith carried the ball right up the line to the circle, where, eluding the efforts of the various Invercargillites who had rushed up to take the place of goalie, she scored. After this success, however, Collegiate seemed to lapse and Invercargill added another three to their total, two by Miss Green and one by Miss Parry, so that the final score was— Invercargill 8, Collegiate B 1. Mr F. Hinton was referee. TECHNICAL v. UNION. Technical put a team out on the ground for the first time to-day and surprised everyone by defeating Union. It must, however, be realized that Union were playing one short. The game was an interesting and closely-contested one, although Union did not play their usual brilliant game. In the first half, no score was made, but in the second, Miss D. McKenzie secured, and carrying the ball down the line centred to Miss M. Kirkpatrick, who scored. The score remained at Technical 1, Union 0, when the final whistle blew. Mr Taverner was referee.
